Oahu Day 1

On Saturday morning, my mom picked us up at 5:30, and she took us to GSP airport.  We took a 30 minute flight to Atlanta, and then we hopped on a plane to Hawaii!  This trip is our first to Hawaii, and we absolutely love this place!

Our flight lasted 9 hours, but it really did not seem that bad.  We all had our own TV screens with On Demand movies, games, TV shows, etc., and they fed us TWO meals.  I bought a pair of $2 headphones, and it was well worth the $2 for the entertainment it provided.  Somehow, I ended up getting 3 pairs because I kept breaking mine.  Whoops!  We arrived in Hawaii at 4 pm their time, so it felt like 9 pm to us.

It had been a long day, but we at least walked outside to watch the sunset at our hotel.  We're staying at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.  It is gorgeous and such a fun place!

Our first morning, we went to Pearl Harbor.

It was a rainy morning, but I found that weather kind of appropriate for what we were doing.  We watched a short video about December 7, 1941, and then we took a ferry ride over to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Here's a list of the men's names who were killed at Pearl Harbor.

It was a very educational experience, and it makes me truly appreciate the men and women who serve our country.

Caleb is such a history dork, and I'm pretty sure he could have stayed at Pearl Harbor all day long going in the museums and checking out all the things set up.

Here's the stadium where the Pro Bowl was played last week.  We passed it after leaving Pearl Harbor.

We headed towards the North Shore of Oahu after Pearl Harbor, and we stopped at the Dole Plantation on the way.

It was a very neat place, with a Pineapple maze (similar to our corn maze) and the Pineapple Express train ride.

We bought some fresh mango to enjoy during our drive!

The smartest thing we did for this trip, well the 2 smartest things I guess, are:
1.  Bring our Garmin
and
2.  Rent a car

It has been so.much.fun. driving around in our big ole Lincoln.  This picture is the only we have of it, and unfortunately my eyes are closed. Sorry.  Caleb got us a free upgrade at the car rental office from our "compact car."  It's been great!

The North Shore of Oahu is well-known for its huge  waves.  The ones we saw were about 10-15 feet high, and today they were expected to be about 25 feet!  Huge.

This picture does not do it justice.  We had lunch at Ted's Bakery, a place mentioned in my Fodor's travel book, and then we watched a surf competition on Sunset Beach.  You can see the surfers in the picture above.   (i added a better pic)

We went to this cute little city, Hale'iwa, and did some shopping after our self-guided tour of the North Shore.

We made it back to our resort in time for the 2nd half of the Super Bowl.  Then we headed out on the town for yummy dinner and running around in the rain, ha!

It's been so much fun already!  Aloha!
